Vena Reed
Graduate Assistant
Vena Reed is a former educator with a background in Secondary Education. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in English with a minor in Psychology. She also obtained her Master of Arts in Teaching degree from Virginia Commonwealth University with a concentration in English, Language, and Literature for Secondary Education. She is currently finishing her first year as a doctoral student in Alabama State University’s Education Leadership, Policy, and Law program.
Vena began her career in Harlem, New York, teaching English and co-teaching History to fifth and seventh graders. During her time teaching in Harlem, she served as a grade team lead for the seventh grade team and obtained an excellence in teaching award for ethos. She then transitioned to teaching History to sixth graders in Englewood, New Jersey, where she was interviewed for the school news publication for her role in expanding the curriculum to include a wider variety of early ancient cultures, teaching philosophy, and leading and facilitating a foundational sixth grade academic showcase. An active member of the school community, Vena served on various hiring committees, the diversity, equity, and inclusion committee, coached Volleyball and Track and Field, served as a co-advisor for the middle school magazine, and co-advised the kids of color affinity group.
